Round
Solid Copper Billets
|
Tips
on choosing a solid copper billet: Largest solid copper
billets are used for breaking off large flakes or sometimes
called spalling, such as the 1-3/4, 1-1/2" and the
1-1/4" diameters. The most popular length in these
larger sizes are the 5". They are adequate for heavy
work such as trimming and rock hunting. You can't hurt these
tools with over ground platforms.
Solid copper billets serve as an essential component for
the serious knapper's tool kit. Tip: Heavier billets
make for aggressive flaking but leave little room for error.
The 1", 7/8", 3/4" are the smaller sizes
used for percussion billets on preforms and finish work.
The smaller diameter rods are for micro billets or punches
and experimentation. Some of the advantages of solid copper
billets include durability, heavier weight and nearly indefinite
tool life. *
The Asterisk indicates the recommended and most widely preferred
sizes by experienced knappers. Please
Note: Billets are + or - 1/8" in length due to machining
when applicable. |

The 3-1/2 Lb. "Stapleton" Spalling Hammer
Another
a great hammer for working 2 pound nodules on up to 80 pounds
or more! Credit for this hammer's design goes to Gene Stapleton,
he's a genus! :-) The advantage of the hammer is in it's
rotating copper head and short handle. The problem with
fixed head copper hammers is that the contact area on the
hammer keeps hitting the same area over and over. This results
in a large flat spot on the hammer, rendering it useless.
This is the solution, it Works great! |
Applications:
* Spalling
* Heavy trimming |

The 3 Lb. Mild Steel Spalling Hammer
My
personal favorite! Economical and tough!
This hammer is perfect for trimming large spalls and spalling
small to medium sized nodules ranging from 2 lbs up to 70
lbs. It's a mild steel that even works well on Dacite and
Obsidian, heat treated stone and any grade of chert or flints.
Don't let them tell you, "you
can't spall with a steel hammer"! I have learned from
experts like Steve Berhnes, Claude VanOrder and Gene Stapleton
who are experts at spalling stone.
This is the mildest steel available,
other store bought hammers are too hard and will shatter
good rock or cause flakes to fall short. This is a cost
effective alternative to copper hammers. Copper hammers
are more forgiving in striking angles but are expensive.
This is a handy item for any rock hunter! |

* Spalling
* Heavy trimming |
